When it comes to landscaping you might think of fall as the forgotten season. While people often think of autumn in terms of clean-up (think leaf piles) and pulling weeds, it can be the ideal time to transition from the bright flowers of summer to fun and even spooky Halloween decor. There are tons of ways to incorporate the elegant colors of fall or tap into your fun and freighting side by being the best-dressed house in your neighborhood for Halloween. Here are some tips to get you started.

Chrysanthemums

Commonly known as mums, these hardy fall flowers come in an array of colors from golden yellow to jewel-colored ruby and amethyst to crisp and clean white. Play up your front porch by adding containers of mums. A few different colors of mums in different sized containers and varying heights will add a stunning and colorful impact to your home’s exterior. Mums can also be planted to accent a walkway, garden path, or around your landscaping. For an added fall touch, consider hollowing out a large pumpkin and placing your potted mums inside.

Spooky Decor

Go into any store and you will find there is no storage of Halloween decor or if you’re crafty, consider creating decor yourself. You don’t have to terrorize your home in over the top ways, a couple of gravestones, a traditional scarecrow, a couple of strategically placed cobwebs on top of your mums, black crows or bones placed throughout your landscape will add a fun element without going too far.

Light the way

It’s the time of year when it gets darker earlier. Light the way with beautiful fall lanterns, traditional paper bags with a fun jack o lantern face or even plain are a lovely and inviting way to light the path to your home. Traditional pumpkins add a spooky glow and you can even spray paint tiki torches in autumn hues to add a touch of elegance. Take your decor to your backyard by adding fall-inspired pieces to your outdoor fireplace, patio, and furniture!

Make a statement

Add serious curb appeal to your home by adding fall leaf garland around your door, elegantly painted pumpkins, corn stalks, and even a new fall wreath. If you are feeling a little bold you can even paint your home’s exterior door with beautiful autumn-inspired colors such as a rusty orange, goldenrod yellow, or even bright red. Look in nature for inspiration!
