"What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness." - John Steinbeck

Sadly autumn is fading and winter will be here before you know it. If you are a midwesterner you know all too well that winters are harsh and not for the faint at heart, especially in Illinois when you are also dealing with the wind! While you might be tempted to get projects done around the house such as getting your HVAC unit and fireplace maintained, another project is equally as important, your landscaping. Landscaping maintenance is extremely beneficial and come spring, you’ll be thanking yourself for not putting this task off. As you’re curling up with that mug of hot chocolate or tea and watching the harsh conditions of winter unfold you can have peace of mind knowing your landscaping projects are under your belt. Here are some tips to get you started.

Seeding

Do you want a beautiful thick lush lawn in the Spring without any bare spots which are eyesores? If so, fall is the perfect time to aerate your lawn and overseed.

Condition

While lawn care is often thought of in terms of what lies above the surface, we need to consider the soil. Beautiful landscaping starts from the group up so consider conditioning your soil. To start you can add organic matter such as coffee grounds or compost which helps prevent brown spots in your lawn in the spring and adds nutrients to your lawn. In addition to your soil, fall is the ideal time to fertilize your trees and scrubs.

Cut back perennials

Your perennials were probably showstoppers in the spring and summer months, give the love back by cutting back the stems of your perennials to within an inch or two of the ground before temperatures plummet.
