While some might view winter as a season to hibernate until Spring, others see it as a gentle time of reflection, rest, and kindred spirits. The extra hours of darkness Illinois residents deal with during the winter months is the perfect opportunity to embrace the season by creating a warm and enviable exterior space this year. It’s not too late to dive into the perfect landscape design that suits your personality. Here are some tips and ideas for inspiration.

Container designs

Are you ready for a show-stopping front entrance? If so, consider filling containers of various sizes and designs with sprigs of winter greens, tall birch branches, red winterberry, pinecones, and lights for the perfect display. Think outside of the box, containers don’t have to match if that’s not your style. If you want an eclectic design, head to your nearest thrift or antique store and use unexpected containers such as old wagons, mailboxes, wheelbarrows, urns, and even vintage ice skates can be filled with greenery. The best thing about container gardens is you can adapt your style and they will look cheerful all winter long.

Use nature as inspiration

Sub-zero temperatures are oftentimes hard to deal with but you can use them to your advantage when it comes to your exterior winter decor. How? Ice! Ice lanterns are a gorgeous, unexpected, and simple way to make a huge impact. Simply fill a plastic cup of water inside a medium to a large container full of about ¾ water to allow for expansion. Add evergreen sprigs, crushed candy canes, or cranberries, if so desired, and freeze overnight (depending on the size of your containers). Run warm water over your lantern to unmold your creation and light tea candles or large pillars. Set outside and watch onlookers gawk at your beautiful creation. This is a great idea if you are hosting a party to WOW your guests.

Utilize your outdoor space

Think about your landscaping in the summer. What are your favorite areas in your yard? Don’t let those spaces become obsolete in the winter, think about ways to transform your favorite spaces into a winter wonderland. Grab an old farmhouse table, some twinkle lights, and a portable fire pit and host a winter garden party. Remember those ice lanterns above? Picture those scattered around your garden with the warm glow of a bonfire, plaid blankets, and friends to share the warmth. You can also add height to your space by stringing lights in your trees and hanging lanterns from branches of various heights. Don’t have the perfect space? Let A.M. Don’t forget your front door

Nothing looks quite as festive as a wreath on your front door and wreaths are great because they can be customized to almost any style. Think of guided gold accents, ribbon and preserved botanicals for an elegant statement, a traditional wreath of boughs and berries, or something unexpected such as colorful ribbons in the form of a circle.
